Generations of Generosity

St. Therese parish began in the early1900’s when the Corbett family built a small chapel and rectory so the priest at St. Mary’s could celebrate summer Masses at Wrightsville Beach.  Over the years, parishioners have responded in times of need or opportunity to provide the foundation in faith we enjoy today.

The wooden church was replaced in the 1940s with a brick structure which still forms part of our church.  When Hurricane Hazel completely destroyed the rectory and severely damaged the church in 1954, parishioners stepped up and built a new rectory and repaired the church. Just nine years later the church was expanded to provide social space that could be used in the summer for overflow at Mass—the wider part of our present church.  As the parish grew a rectory was purchased on the mainland and the former rectory became the office and a space for social gatherings, meetings and classes.  Later, land was purchased across Lumina Avenue to provide additional parking.  Most recently a house and land north of the church was purchased to provide classrooms, offices and additional parking.

The sacrificial support of many parishioners over the years has provided the facilities we now enjoy.  St. Therese is a vibrant and growing community of faith united in Jesus Christ.  As we are blessed with growth and involvement we need to consider addressing our facility limitations.
